/Cairoscape – Images, Imagination and Imaginary of a Contemporary MegaCity /introduces the dynamic situation of contemporary art and culturein Egypt to the Athens public. Taking the Arab-African megalopolis ofCairo as a starting point, Cairoscape proposes a different way oflooking at the modern city and at the phenomenon of contemporaryurbanization. In the project Cairo is held up as an emblematic place, catalyst and generator of new narrative series that ultimately transcendlocal context: Cairo as translocal place, simultaneously recipient andorigin of a set of cultural influences and ideas floating in the region, and privileged observation point that as such may disclose unexpectedyet familiar scenarios./Cairoscape /features artists and practitioners who in their workreflect a certain contemporary and existential urban condition connectedto the city of Cairo, its suggestive power and urban imaginary. Works byartists both from Egypt and artists who have recently completedresidencies in Egypt are included, allowing differing views of Cairo tobe juxtaposed. At the same time, Cairoscape examines the possibilities, the potentialities and the paradoxes of Cairo as a site of artisticproduction today./Cairoscape – Images, Imagination and Imaginary of a Contemporary MegaCity /has been initially produced with the support ofHauptstadtkulturfonds, Berlin, ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen,Goethe-Institut Ägypten and the Ministry of Culture, Sector of FineArts, Cairo. The exhibition shown at the Cultural Centre of the City ofAthens in the frame of the Athens Photo Festival 2008 is an adaptedversion of the Berlin show that was accompanied by a dense programme of events including performances, filmscreenings, lectures, publicdiscussions, and workshops.
The venue in Athens is cooperation between Cairoscape and the Cultural Organisation of the City of Athens, the Hellenic Centre of Photographyand supported by the Goethe Institut Athens.
